The Power of a High Five

Are you a podcast listener? I am. There are several I rely on in different areas of interest, including health, sport and nutrition. One on the topic of health is a now successful Canadian podcast called ‘The Ultimate Health Podcast’. And an episode from a few weeks back has remained stuck in my brain. In this episode, the guest speaker, Mel Robbins, was making a compelling case for the power of a ‘high five’. Now, she wasn’t referring to the high-fives team members give one another. She was referring to us, as individuals, simply giving ourselves an ‘air’ high five. Further, she explained, that there is scientific evidence to back up the ‘positive’ impact giving oneself can have in creating a more personal positive outlook on life.

So, okay ;), this speaker was also selling her latest book ‘The High 5 Habit’, on the back of 4 previous bestsellers, which means Mel Robbins knows how to sell! You Go Girl!! But here’s the thing, if this simple act, which is absolutely free and easily available to all of us, has the remotest chance of changing how we view the world, and our bodies in the world, then I say give it a try! The only downside I can imagine is potential awkwardness if someone ‘sees’ you giving yourself a high five. But then again, who really cares what someone else thinks, especially if it works.

So, go on :) - just go for it! Give it a try for a week or so, maybe as a part of your morning routine…brush teeth, high five yourself , wash face, etc. Who knows, if there is a journey you are struggling with, like starting a fitness routine, maybe this celebratory start to the day will be the thing that helps to ignite your future!
